You should know that all modern nations are artificial constructs. There is nothing natural about them. In most respects, you have no more in common with most of the other citizens of your nation, than you do with many of other nations.
The family is a natural unit. You have a direct biological link to all the members of your family.
The kin (alias the larger family) is a natural unit. You have a direct biological link to most of your kinsmen, and your other kinsmen at least care for, support and live for those you have a direct biological link to.
The tribe was a natural unit. All the tribesmen could trace their lineage back to the same progenitor.
The race (alias sub-species) is a natural unit. You have a direct biological link to all the members of your race too. The link is weaker than to family members and kinsmen, but it is still there.
The species is a natural unit. You have a direct biological link to all the members of your species too. The link is weaker than to family members, kinsmen and individuals of your own race, but it is still there.
The nation often comes into conflict with the natural units: young men are often sent to kill and die not to defend their families or kins, but to defend the nation, and they often fight against others who belong to their own natural units when they do. The interests of the nation comes at the expense of our natural interests.
So we rather commonly (whenever war breaks out between the nations) kill our racial brothers and sisters, so that the artificial construct called ‘the nation’ can thrive, and continue to break down and fight the natural units. When we do we fight for our own doom. We fight against our own interests.
When the next war comes, please remember that. When you look down the iron sights and see a man who looks just like you, wearing the uniform of the ‘enemy’ nation. He is a man of your race; your unit. It is in your interest that he survives rather than any ‘nation’ on this planet.
Work only for your natural units. Ever.
